This website serves as a repository for documents, tips and other resources for educators seeking to develop mobile news applications with students in the classroom.
This site includes information about the mobile news app I created along with journalism and computer science students at San Diego State University in the spring semester of 2012, called AzteCast.
The mobile app is currently available for download on the Apple Store here: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/aztecast/id541257765?mt=8
It’s also available for the Android platform: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.aztecast.android.app&hl=en
AzteCast was built off of the Ushahidi open-source platform. The project was generously funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation via the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication’s “Building a Bridge Between the Knight News Challenge and JMC Programs” 2011-2012 grant program.
Enjoy exploring and drop me a line if you would like any advice, insight or other information on deploying a mobile app in your classroom. You can contact me at aschmitz at mail.sdsu.edu.
As this project is open-source, you can find the following files on github:
More tools and resources will be posted here often – so check back anytime!
